Baby Food Ingredients – Homemade Baby Food vs Manufactured

Types of baby food

Manufactured baby foods come in two sorts: ‘wet’, pre-prepared meals, mainly in containers and cans; and dry foods within packs (these have to be combined with water or even milk). The meals are labelled or classified depending on exactly what age of infant they are targeted at. Within these types you can choose from the progressively popular natural ranges or even non-organic kinds. Then you’ve got a choice from the vast range of flavours and recipes — from ‘turkey dinner’ and ‘apple pie dessert’ to chicken korma and courgette risotto with blueberry.

Babies can begin consuming solid meals at close to four months. Prior to this age, their own fragile digestive systems are not fully developed enough to deal easily with anything besides milk or water. The majority of parents begin by giving their babies baby rice, that you simply buy in packets and mix along with boiled water or milk. Baby rice is very dull, so your baby gets accustomed to the texture of food before experiencing any real taste. Formula or breast milk should still be the primary source of nutrition. By the time your child is about 6 months old, so long as everything is mashed up or even puréed, his / her taste buds as well as stomach tend to be more or less prepared for the majority of the foods you consume.

Shop-bought or home-made baby food?

The big question confronted by the majority of parents once they start correct weaning is whether or not to go for store-purchased packets and jars of food, to make home-made baby meals, or to perform a bit of each. Manufactured baby foods possess clear benefits in terms of convenience. You don’t have to do any scraping, boiling or puréeing — you just pop open the jar and down it goes (with some infants, without any requirement for heating up either). If you feed straight from the jar, you don’t even need to do any cleaning-up.

For many mothers and fathers, on the other hand, this sort of convenience is not the be-all and end-all. Home-made meals also have obvious advantages, not least because you have total control over precisely what your baby consumes. You know where the food originates from and that it doesn’t include any ingredients you have no idea about.

You are able to alter the consistency of the meals and test out different preferences and blends to suit your infant’s progress (use either a special blender for baby meals or a portable blender; or else you can mash soft meals, such as plums, up with the fork). Home-made meals could be cheaper if you are using the same meals that the rest of the family is consuming, and can additionally help babies get used to the flavour of home-prepared food. Nor does home-made food have to be much less convenient — you are able to, for example, make batches of food to freeze in ice-cube trays and defrost small amounts when it’s needed.

Taking precedence Nutrition on taste, or vice versa, as the tastes of the individual and the perceived health of a person possesses. There were many campaigns on health, nutrition and calories and with which governments and nonprofit organizations are constantly enhancing the reputation of individuals.

There are many laws, such as printing the calorific value of edible food, particularly fat and junk food in bags that allow consumers to understand the nature of the food they eat. With many of these regulations, poor eating habits keep food market in the sea gay abandon.
A recent study reveals that some baby foods are rich in sugar and fat cheeseburger and chocolate biscuits under the pretext of being healthy. Food manufacturers have a different criterion to justify their position by supporting studies and surveys are based only on a meager 100 grams, while “total” food has a relatively small amount of sugar and fat.

View other facts. Doctors in India found that junk food is the cause of asthma in children: the truth that could not have come at a better time – the “World Asthma Day, celebrated annually on May 5 . However, the child born prematurely Agatha Holloway is fed nutrition equivalent to 20,000 calories, as has been underweight than sixteen months and weighs only 17 pounds. Its diet consists of porridge with cream for breakfast and toast with nutella followed by a snack at midmorning, as counsel and hummus. fat puddings, meats, roasts and food drowning in olive oil, butter and cream are other generous doses of food your child should eat to maintain health.

Adherence to general principles of abstinence and monounsaturated fat foods with high calorific value as rare examples above. When can I introduce Eggs to my baby?

Most pediatric resources agree that egg yolks are fine for baby to eat when baby is around 8 months old. Please keep in mind that the egg whites should not be fed to baby before 1 year old.

note about egg allergies

Recommendations for introducing eggs to baby are changing! A 2008 study, and many studies done after, indicated that waiting to introduce eggs to your baby may not prevent any atopic (i.e. ezcema) disease(s). Many are now suggesting that babies may be introduced to whole eggs from the start (for those with no known history of food allergies and/or egg allergies).

"Although solid foods should not be introduced before 4 to 6 months of age, there is no current convincing evidence that delaying their introduction beyond this period has a significant protective effect on the development of atopic disease regardless of whether infants are fed cow milk protein formula or human milk. This includes delaying the introduction of foods that are considered to be highly allergic, such as fish, eggs, and foods containing peanut protein." Click to view report

A recent interview with Dr. Greer in Medscape Pediatrics notes that " "Now we can tell mothers: If you have exclusively breastfed for 4 months and your child is not at risk for allergy, you can introduce any food at 6 or 8 months or whatever."

Please be sure to discuss the introduction of potential allergenic foods with your pediatrician!

updated January 2010

Eggs, particularly the egg whites, are one of the top 8 of all allergens. Many studies that have been done on infants with egg allergies find that by the time the infant has reached age 5, the allergy has been outgrown. This is good news as the egg is highly nutritious and an important part of ones diet.

If your family has a history of egg allergies, then it is probably best to wait until after 12 months old to introduce egg yolks. Read more about Egg Allergies.

1. Crack a few eggs and separate the white from the yolk (you may use the shell for this or use an egg-separator)
2. Warm olive oil or butter in a frying pan
3. Scramble the yolk in a bowl with formula, breast milk, juice or whole milk and transfer to frying pan
4. Add a tablespoon of pureed veggies or pre-cooked soft dices of veggies, as you are scrambling the yolks
5. Cook over medium heat, scrambling constantly, until thoroughly cooked.

Vegan Babies

Vegans don’t eat any animal products at all. If you want your baby to have a vegan diet, it’s sensible to keep him on breast milk for at least the first year. (Try to avoid giving him soya milk before he is a year old: COMA recommends that it is only given to babies under a year where there is a special need, for example a clear diagnosis of cow’s milk allergy.)

Ask your health visitor about the possible need for vitamin supplements. You will need to take extra care as your baby gets older that his diet provides what he needs to stay healthy. Contact the Vegan Society for more information.

Avocado For Your Baby

Avocado is a great first food for your baby. It is an excellent source of "good" fat, and it can be bought year round in the store. Avocados are ripe when they feel soft (but too soft can be spoiled so be careful when purchasing them). Another great thing about avocados is that they are easy to take with you. Just grab a spoon - shove an avocado in your bag and you have instant baby food (who needs those jars??). Like bananas, avocado is a fruit that you can buy early in the week and then use later on. If your avocado becomes soft before you want to eat it, just refrigerate it until you are ready. It will keep up to a week in the fridge uncut.

Easy Avocado Salad

(serves 2)
1 Avocado

extra virgin olive oil
red wine vinegar
salt and pepper
Cut ripe avocado in half lengthwise and remove pit. Splash a little extra virgin olive oil and then a little vinegar in the center. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and serve with spoon.

Corn For Your Baby

Fresh corn is really best in season, which is in the summer. If it is really fresh, you can just cut it off the stem and enjoy! Your baby will love its sweet taste and get good practice with his pincer grasp attempting to pick it up. Of course, frozen corn will work for the rest of the year, and it is still delicious. Another way to serve your baby corn is by making grits. Grits are ground up form of corn that are ubiquitous in the Southern United States, and are particularly good mixed with butter or scrambled eggs (for the adults until your baby turns 1 year old).

Corn and Black Bean Salad

1 bag frozen corn or 2 or 3 ears corn shucked and kernels sliced off
1 15 oz cans black beans
1 avocado, diced
juice of one lime
1/4 cup of finely diced red onion (optional)
Drain black beans well and add corn into a medium sized bowl. Dice avocados and add to mixture. Cut lime in half and squeeze on top of avocados. Add onion and mix well. Refrigerate until ready to eat.

Favorite Food: Apples

Apples are one of those foods you want your child to love. "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" has a nice marketing ring to it - and it may be true! There are lots of varieties of apples to choose from and it will be fun to introduce your baby to them all. We believe it would be best to stay away from the sour apple varieties such as Granny Smith (green apples) to start. Try a Gala apple or another sweet variety to ensure your baby has a great first experience.

You can give your baby apples starting at 6 months old. You have a choice between commercial baby food, jars of applesauce, and making your own with fresh apples. We recommend that you buy organic because 91% of apples tested by the USDA were found to contain pesticide residue. If you are buying applesauce, read the label to ensure that there is no added sugar to their mix. Ascorbic acid is one added ingredient to apple sauce that should cause no concern. It is Vitamin C and it is used as a preservative to keep the applesauce from turning brown.
